Ban Facial Surveillance
Face surveillance is a threat to our civil liberties. This technology would turn our city streets into a constant suspect line-up, giving police or any city authority 24/7 access to trace our whereabouts, who we associate with, and how we go about our day. The technology also does not work, plagued by error rates as high as 98% and a pattern of misidentifying people of color, women, and transgender persons more frequently than white males.
What the initiative does:
-
Bans the City of Portland or any third-party contractor from using face surveillance technology;
-
Cannot be used as evidence;
-
Provides attorneys fees for complaints; and,
-
Pays a fine to injured residents.
